Good morning from the shoreline.
Mother's Day weekend lands Sunday with a dozen brunches between Mystic and Stonington, a sailboat on the river with mimosas, a planter workshop, three flower sales, a farm day. If you haven't planned anything yet, you can still pull this off without panicking.
Here's what I've surfaced this week.
In today’s issue: Mother's Day in the corridor, three ways · Jacques Pépin lands at Oyster Club tonight · A kelp farm opens its doors Saturday · Two author talks, an improv class, and a serial-killer lecture

Mother's Day along the shoreline
Sunday May 10th is Mother's Day, and there's no shortage of options on the shoreline. Three different shapes of day, depending on what your Mom actually wants:
Sit-down brunch. Engine Room and Shipwright's Daughter in Mystic are both running a holiday service starting at 10am. Worth booking today if you haven't yet. Hilton Mystic, S&P Oyster, Port of Call, Filomena's in Waterford, and Rocks 21 are also on deck.
Outdoors. Stone Acres Farm in Stonington opens at 10am for a Mother's Day farm day, or head up to Stonington Vineyards for food, wine, and live music.
On the water. Mother's Day Sailing aboard ARGIA leaves Mystic at 9:30am with complimentary mimosas for two hours on the river.
If your Mom is a flower person: the Trillium Garden Club Plant Sale in Groton runs Saturday morning and Union Baptist Church in Mystic is doing a flower sale Saturday afternoon.

Jacques Pépin at Oyster Club - tonight
Jacques Pépin is in town at Oyster Club for the 50th anniversary of La Technique, the cookbook that taught a generation of American chefs how to actually cook. Dinner and a book signing.
Project Oceanology + Stonington Kelp Co. - kelp farm boat tour
Project Oceanology and the Stonington Kelp Company partnered up to take folks out on the water and show what an actual working kelp farm looks like. Two hours on the boat with the people doing the work.

Welcome Daisy Duke to the Crew! Thanks for sharing with us Kristen and reminding us to enjoy the sun while it’s here.

It's 1844, and you've finished a long day on the docks. You swing into 79 Bank Street to pick up groceries and provisions for the week. The building is brand new — Captain Giles Harris from one of New London's whaling families just put it up. He lives upstairs and sells groceries and provisions downstairs.
Fast-forward to 1878. Same corner, same building. Only now it's the Columbia Hotel, and you're booking a room for the weekend.
Skip ahead to 1931. The Sigros family has taken over and renamed the place the Hygienic Restaurant and Delicatessen. You sit down for a sandwich.
By 1996 the restaurant is gone and the building is nine days from being torn down to make a parking lot for the bank next door. A group of volunteer artists incorporate as Hygienic Art, Inc., wins a stay of demolition under the state's Environmental Protection Act and buys the building outright in 1998.
The gallery opens in 2000 and is still there. If you stand on the corner of Bank and Golden this Saturday for the Stories of Somewhere opening at Hygienic Art, you're standing in a whaling captain's grocery store.
