Connecticut’s history is full of quiet revolutions, bold headlines, and the kind of stories that still echo through our streets and shoreline.

Here are a few things that happened this week over the years:

  • May 5, 1809: Mary Kies of South Killingly becomes the first woman in the U.S. to receive a patent for her method of braiding straw and silk into bonnets.

  • May 6, 1940: The Waterbury Republican and American wins a Pulitzer Prize for exposing widespread voter fraud and corruption in city politics.

  • May 7, 1873: Hartford becomes the sole capital of Connecticut after centuries of shared governance with New Haven.

  • May 8, 2012: Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are and Ridgefield resident, passes away at 83 after reshaping children's literature.

  • May 10, 2011: Norberto Gonzalez Claudio is arrested for orchestrating a 1983 West Hartford heist that stole $7 million from Wells Fargo, one of the largest cash robberies in U.S. history.

History’s always worth a glance, but here’s what’s ahead for your week in Mystic:

  • Today is Cinco de Mayo, which means packed bars and cold margaritas all around.

  • Mother’s Day is coming up this weekend — spots like Engine Room, Stone Acres Farm, and several others are offering special brunch menus (and they’re booking fast).

  • Plus, there’s live music all over town to keep your nights moving.

Once home to Captain Silas Beebe — shipmaster and ice merchant — this 19th-century estate on Beebe Cove is the real deal: 524 feet of waterfront, nine fireplaces, a restored guest house, a barn, a pool, and a view that’ll make you forget your phone exists.
