Good morning from the shoreline.

Lighter issue this week, but big events. Cinderella opens the Garde tonight, the Como's annual gala at Stone Acres Farm, and the Mystic Half takes over Olde Mistick Sunday. Plus a Ship's Log that takes us 235 years back to the night the ground groaned open in East Haddam.

Here’s what i’ve surfaced this week.

Falls are a leading cause of older adults losing their independence, and most people see them coming six months out but won't say so out loud. Natalie Edwards from Strength from Within and Manali Kadam of Tricore Physical Therapy and Wellness are running a workshop in Waterford on the mechanics of staying steady: balance, strength, the small movements that decide whether you catch yourself or don't.

Worth a Sunday morning if this is in your life or your family's.

Sun Jun 15 · 10am · Strength from Within, Waterford · $25 [Reserve a seat →]

Welcome Wednesday to the Crew! Thanks for sharing with us Elena.

You may or may not be familiar with the term "Moodus noises." It refers to a strange phenomenon up the CT River in East Haddam, where the ground itself groans. Deep underground booms locals have reported for centuries. The village takes its name from a Native American word meaning "the place of many noises."

On the night of May 16, 1791, 235 years ago this week, Moodus did more than groan. Around 8 p.m., two large shocks rolled through. Stone walls crumbled. Chimneys toppled. Doors flew open. A fissure several yards long opened in the ground. A ship captain anchored down in Clinton said he watched fish leap straight out of the water.

Thirty aftershocks followed that night and hundreds more in the days after. The quake was felt as far as New York City and Boston. Modern scientists put it at a magnitude 4.3, still the largest earthquake in Connecticut history.

The Moodus noises haven't stopped. Geologists now think they're micro-quakes in shallow bedrock.
