The Whaling Capital of Connecticut

By the mid-1800s, New London had become the third-largest whaling port in the world, trailing only New Bedford and Nantucket. In 1850, over $1 million worth of whale oil and bones passed through the port in a single year—the equivalent of roughly $38 million today. Whale oil powered the Industrial Revolution as both lamp fuel and machine lubricant, and the U.S. government was one of the largest purchasers of sperm oil for use in coastal lighthouses.
